CHAPTER TEN

AS SOON AS Sabre returned to the penthouse, he apologized for being late. Lunch with his brother had kept him. To make up for the lost time, he whisked Cady off to a late afternoon of adventure in Paris. They snacked on luscious chocolate and banana-stuffed crepes beneath the Iron Lady. They strolled along a snow-slushed boulevard that hugged the Seine, stopping at most of the bouquinistes that sold books, old prints, sketches and tourist tchotchkes. He’d introduced her to his favorite craft beer at—surprisingly—a quaint little bar owned by Brits in the First Arrondissement.

They’d idled only fifteen minutes in a park because the benches were cold and even though the sun was high, the brisk air hurried them back to walking. Cady had prepared for the walk by wearing jeans, a sweater and the thermal jacket she’d bought in Finland. Yet, she didn’t have time to feel the chill. Absorbing Sabre’s enthusiasm kept her energy on high.

“This is a whirlwind tour of all the touristy stuff,” he commented as they breezed through an old bookstore across from the Notre-Dame Cathedral. It smelled of well-loved tomes and ancient words. “Everyone needs to see it so they can affirm their idea of Paris, oui?”

“Oui.” Not feeling the need to purchase a book, Cady shouldered up alongside him as they strolled toward a Greek restaurant that served savory chicken and fries all smothered with tzatziki sauce. “I need some of that.”

He didn’t refuse her a thing. They settled at a table in the back of the restaurant and made haste of a plate stacked high with crisp fries, shaved gyro chicken and lots of creamy tzatziki.

“I never would have thought I’d be eating Greek food and drinking British beer in Paris.” She dabbed her lips with a napkin. “When do I experience the French cuisine?”

Sabre lifted a finger and winked. “We will dine in my favorite restaurant. It’ll be a little scary for you, perhaps. But I promise you have not tasted better food.”

“Scary? How can a restaurant be scary? Please tell me it’s not one of those dining in the dark places. Or eating nude.”

His laughter echoed across the restaurant. “I promise neither of those, but you will have to wait for the surprise. Now. What next? You want to wander down the Champs-Élysées?”

“Is that the street with all the fancy shops on it?”

“Well.” He wobbled his head, doing that Frenchman thing she’d come to realize was not a yes or a no but somewhere in between. “They also have several international chain stores, and I would not call those fancy.”

She laughed. “Let’s do it. You may have picked up that I like to shop. And I’m so thankful that you are willing to spend the time with me.”

“Cady.” His hand on the back of hers sparked like lightning crackling throughout her system. It reminded her that she was so close to surrendering completely to the man. Could she? Oh, yes!

“I am not trying to make you happy in the sense that you do for your job,” he said.
